LIGHT BOXES AND DRAWING

Swimming in the Persian Gulf beneath a sky lit by stars and bioluminescent plankton, I whispered Ahmad Shamlou's poem "Nocturnal," written in memory of Siavash Kasraei who had been executed. The poem holds together resistance, friendship, and myth. I drew on the architecture of public squares, Naghsh-e Jahan among them, where collective memory, political power, and acts of violence have long converged.
